District Co-ops combine online instruction and face-to-face workshops to allow academically talented students from throughout a region or across a school district to learn together. Co-ops provide appropriate programming for academically talented students. Co-ops replace a quarter of the curriculum in the student's home school in one or more subject area.
Co-ops typically run for nine weeks and are designed to replace one hour of school each day. Students, excused from their language arts/reading class, work independently in a library or resource room setting with Internet access to complete daily tasks - responding to assignments and classmates comments online, completing research, writing papers, and reading. Many students will devote additional time in class by logging on during their free time.
Another fine online offering from WCATY is the WCATY Village Online Community. Safe social networking with an academic twist. Students make friends, join guilds, earn expertise badges and become a part of the community. Select your local CESA on the map to see the classes being offered in your area.
District Co-op courses are run through the schools and school districts and are developed cooperatively. They are not open enrollment courses. WCATY member schools and districts enjoy a discount on all District Co-op courses run in their CESA. Current District Co-op class rates are $175 per student, but schools and districts with 2009-10 memberships pay the reduced rate of $150 per student.
